Hell yeah "people", I am going to Columbus! Got my bags packed, my friend formerly from Ohio driving, and the slide deck and examples. This is going to be a blast. I want to thank Greg Reinacker for donating a copy of Newsgator and 2 months of Online Services for the presentation. It is the perfect prize. If you are in the area, Drew has suggested a get together afterward, so you know it will be fun if Drew brings the camera.

INETA Academic, a committee that Jason Beres and I run, are currently looking for volunteers for the Imagine Cup local competitions around the US. If you are interested in some volunteering opportunities, like judging and speaking, please go to the site and fill out the information. Tonight I used the iTextSharp libraries to transform RSS into the iTextSharp XML dialect, then transform it into PDF. This library is awesome and open source. If you haven't checked it out, I suggest you do. It is a .NET implementation of a Java library set called iText so some of the method names might bug you :D. I forgot how clean (and dirty) C# can actually be until I opened the source to make it support stream as input to the XmlParser instead of the filepath string it supports today.

Working on my presentation

Lately I have been working on some samples for my presentation in Columbus (Drew) and Austin (Scott Belleware). Tonight I came up with a new sample idea. With iTunes 4.2 being one of my favorite applications and one of the only ones, outside of VS.NET, I have open all day, I thought it would be cool to build a transform from the playlist to RSS, based on the songs I have recently played. It isn't a very real world example, unless you are the RIAA :D, but is a good sample on how do convert an existing XML file to RSS. I will post the transform later after I clean it up some more. The web app actually runs decently fast, knowing it has to go through my playlist (3546 songs).

After some testing (thanks DonXML), I feel the syndication compression for .Text is ready. However, if you have any issues, please email me at jjulian2@mac.com. I have included the source, binaries, and compiled changes from the latest release of .Text. I have been very impressed with the HttpCompressionModule integrated into .Text. My bandwidth is down even though the hits are up. As always, please backup your binaries and config before upgrading. With out further ado, here it is.

Bring in the New Year with a new laptop

Dude, I'm getting a Dell :D

Actually a Dell Insprion 8600, and it's about time. Some of you may remember my run in with my backpack and laptop with the wireless card hanging off the side. Running in and out of sessions, I just put it in the wrong way and crack, no more wireless card. Since then I have went through another with the same results. This one has integrated wireless (centrino rules!) and a pretty hefty processor to boot.

I ordered it originally online, but for some reason it considered me a business for Dell Financing and declined Geekswithblogs as a business. I don't have a business, so don't require me to fill in a company name! I decided then to call it in. I told the lady on the phone I wanted a refurbished Insprion 8600 and asked what she had. As a sales person would, she wouldn't let me get a refurbished machine that they could still make. She tried and tried to talked me out of it, but I wasn't going to pay the extra $300 for a identical machine. So I didn't. She set me up with a new machine, identical to the refurbished, for the same price. Not bad eh! I can't wait to see what my Samsung 17in flat panel can do with more than 8mb of video memory.

I don't want to just put my old one in a box, and it is too old to sell (1.13ghz pIII). To bad it can't run Longhorn, or I would try that. Maybe I will make it a Yukon box for XQuery presentations I hope to do this year. I have two more RSS presentations, DevDays in Kansas City, and then I want to start fresh with some new sermons about XML technologies for .NET.

Working on .Text

Right now I am adding some new features to .Text. The main feature is the ability to use and XML data store instead of the SQL database. This will make it possible to get the 4.95/month account for Webhost4life and run a personal blog. At the same time, it will support multi-blogs. This is probably going to take some time to finish, but let me know if this is interesting to you.

Wow, I am actually creating a Test post...but for good reason

If this works, I am will have a new .Text plug-in for NewsGator that supports both .94 and .95 post WITH CATEGORIES. Not only categories though, it supports multiple .Text blogs. It took me quiet a large amount of time because I had to clean code and support the multiple version of the .Text services. I will test it a few more times, then will be looking for some testers before submitting it to NewsGator. Let me know if you want to check it out for me.

I am still looking for feedback on ESFStandard.org and the ESF Standard. If you get a chance, please check it out and fill out the feedback form on the site. We are looking to implement this quickly, but want to get some final thoughts about it.

For you fans of XQuery, there is something new on the horizon, XQueryX! XQueryX is an XML representation of XQuery. Though the representations look about 20 times larger than the statement itself, it does look promising. Well my laser jet just finished printing the draft, so I better get to my reading!
